Medications to Improve Concentration and Memory

What prescription medications help improve concentration and memory?

Amphetamines

They are first line medications in children and some adults. They are very effective in improving concentration and attention span. They do have addictive potential, especially in adults. And therefore, all of them are controlled substances. They can have some side effects, especially, palpitations, difficulty sleeping, weight loss.

Wellbutrin (Bupropion)

It’s one of my favorites. Used mostly in adults. It elevates mood, concentration, memory and overall energy levels. It helps quit smoking and weight loss also. Its side effects are generally mild.

Stratterra (Atomoxetine)

Commonly prescribed in both children and adults. It raises concentration and attention span. It controls impulsiveness. It doesn’t have much effect on mood. It has some side effects – like weight loss, stomach upset and feeling tired.

Provigil (Modafinil)

It raises alertness and is more appropriate for patients with daytime sleepiness.
